What is an ultrasound scan?

For most scans, gel is placed on the body part and a probe is rubbed across it visualise inside the body. Ther are differen size probes depending on what we are examining.

A transvaginal scan is when a probe is inserted into the body, to visualise babies or pelvic organs more clearly (you can see 1 week ahead transvaginally than on the body)

Why are my pictures and scan not so clear
Baby's position can be one the factors for poor image quality, we will try and move the baby gently during the scan to achieve the best images.
A high BMI can also affect the quality of the images so can reduced amniotic fluid. Bowel gas can also influence the image quality.
The larger the baby is the less room there is for the baby to move around, ultrasound is like looking through a keyhole so we only little area at a time.

I have never been sexually active, can I have a transvaginal scan?

We are able to provide a transvaginal scan on the consent of the patient, as the hymen can break naturally through horse riding or exercise. If we are still not able to do this on those who are virgo intacta then we would continue to a transabdominal (external) scan, which will need a full bladder.

What if you find some problems or pathology?

The scans we perform are medical first, as healthcare professionals we would be checking the health and wellbeing of your baby or yourself . We would always inform you that we would check the baby or yourself and then inform you of our findings. Once we've checked we would explain and discuss the results and what to do next. We will also inform your GP directly if you need to be referred to the hospital or your baby.

There may be occasions when we need to discuss unexpected findings or bad news. If this happens during your scan, our team will ensure you receive the best possible care delivered to you.

We will also recommend your next steps. With your consent, we are able to contact the local early pregnancy unit or midwife on your behalf where possible. For general health scans, we can email our report to your GP if you provide their contact details.

Can I use my phone or other device to record or take photos during the scan?

Yes. We do allow any videos or photos to be taken BUT at the end of the scan. Please do not record the Sonographer, please note the videos are non diagnostic if on your phone. Please do not record without asking.

What happens at my appointment?

The appointment time listed for each scan includes everything that happens at your appointment. You’ll arrive at reception and be greeted by our friendly clinic team, then go in for your scan with the sonographer. The actual scan time will vary in length, as it depends on what baby is doing and the primary purpose of the scan. We scan according to the ‘As Low As Reasonably Achievable’ principle, which means we aim to expose you and your baby to ultrasound as little as possible – this is guidance defined by our professional bodies and is the responsible way to provide ultrasound scans. We’ll make sure we scan for as long as we can to complete the primary purpose of the scan and make you feel like you’ve had a chance to really bond with baby. You’ll also be able to ask the sonographer any questions you might have before leaving the clinic with your images.

Are children allowed and how many are allowed to attend the scan?

Yes, children are welcome. Four people are allowed to attend including the children.

Can I look at my baby in 4D at any scan?

At your Gender, Anomaly or Growth scan we can show you your baby in 3/D and 4/D. We also perform a 3D/4/D scan at 28-30 wks which also includes a growth scan.
