Can we see gallstones on ultrasound?

Yes we can!

Ultrasound can see gallstones within the gallbladder very easily as long as you have fasted.  The gallballder shrinks if you have eaten therefore you cannot see what is inside it. You can have one or multiple gallstones and they cause pain after eating.

We recommend fasting for six hours before the examination so that the sonographer can see the gallbladder clearly. If you are diabetic, please let staff know so we can adapt your fasting schedule.
After we have received your payment a member of staff will send out confirmation of your examination. If they have any queries they will ring you. Thank you.
